Trauma is conceived as being 'trapped' in the body in the original way in which you experienced it, causing you to want to avoid thoughts and experiences that remind you of it. Meanwhile, your mind and body naturally recall the thoughts, sensations and feelings when prompted due to unwanted stimuli (loud noises, reminders of places, etc.).

Utilizing EMDR, your therapist can safely guide you through the trauma to help reprocess it as a less-disturbing, distant memory, rather than an active, living experience that still causes the original stress, emotions, and somatic body sensations that feel overwhelming.
